How to choose a UPS
Pick a UPS by four parameters: load power, topology, required runtime and form factor. Here is a short take on each.
Power
Add up the wattage of the equipment you protect and choose a UPS with a 20–30% margin. Vendors rate UPS in VA and W — size by watts.
Topology
Line-interactive units are cheaper and fit PCs and workstations. Online (double-conversion) units deliver a clean sine wave and suit servers and critical loads.
Runtime
Runtime depends on battery capacity and load. A few minutes is enough for a safe shutdown; for longer autonomy add battery modules.
Form factor
Tower units stand on the floor or a desk; rack units mount in a server cabinet. The choice depends on placement.
